iaStorA - hard drive disconnecting

$

0

I wish to report a problem I have encountered whereby a hard drive would regularly appear to disconnect (sometimes for 30-60 seconds or so and sometimes until reboot) whilst using both the (manufacturers recommended) Intel SATA RAID/AHCI driver 14.6.0.1029 and the more recent updated driver.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2HP and the hard drive a Samsung 640GB HD642JJ (this is a secondary drive, the OS is on a Samsung SSD).

Each time the problem occurred I would need to wait 30-60 seconds to access the drive again (or sometimes reboot the system) and the SMART UMDA CRC error count would increment by one or two.

At first I assumed a hardware problem and changed SATA data cables, power cables, motherboard input locations etc. I even tried a different firmware for the drive. Then I stumbled across problems with the intel driver and tried switching to the standard microsoft AHCI SATA controller which solved the issue.

Unfortunately, benchmarks indicate I have suffered a slight performance drop with the SSD and would prefer to use the recommended intel driver if this issue did not occur.

I hope someone finds this information useful.

Hi Pip_Jones,

The new RST driver is not yet released. Please be patient, Intel is working very close with Microsoft®, there are compatibility issues with Windows® 10.

Re: PCI memory controller - function of?

Thanks for the reply. However you linked me to a generic RAM memory controller. That is not what I was asking about. I was asking about a 'PCI memory controller'.      I believe it may be related in functionality to Robson/Intel Turbo RAM - just a newer incarnation.

Intel Turbo Memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

In particular, there is the following description from the link which seems to indciate the PCI connection:

The Turbo memory cache connects to a motherboard via a mini-PCIe interface. It supports features available in MicrosoftWindows Vista, namely ReadyBoost (a hard-drive caching solution via flash memory) and ReadyDrive (a hard-drive caching solution via hybrid drives). These features allow both read caching and write caching of data. Often this is implemented with a Disk Filtering Option ROM (DFOROM)..

I would just like somebody familiar with this area to confirm my hunch.

Updating RST on W10 - error loading language resource

$

Hey,

so I'm using Windows 10 64-Bit - updated through 8.1. Now I wanted to change my SATA-Controller from AHCI to RAID. To accomplish that, I had to deactivate that Windows 8/10 WHQL thingy in the BIOS and in Windows set the boot to safe mode, then changed to RAID before it got loaded. In Safe Mode the necessary driver got installed and activated automatically. Restarted, back in Windows my RAID configuration was working properly.

System:

MB: MSI X99S SLI Plus

CPU: Intel i7 5930K

From my prior installation Intel Rapid Storage Technology "14.6.0.1029" was installed and I saw on https://downloadcenter.intel.com/de/download/25165/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technologie-Intel-RST-RAID-Treiber that there is the new version "14.8.0.1042". So I downloaded the zip file, extracted and wanted to start "SetupRST.exe". I always get the error: "Error loading language resouce". When I hit "OK" it closes itself. So I googled a lot and found a solution to "unzip" the .exe with 7-Zip. So I get the two .msi files to install and the "media1.cab" file. According to my 64-Bit OS I tried to install "RST_x64.msi". This didn't work. Then I thought I might have to uninstall first - same thing. I get the error with the language resource when trying to uninstall the current version of RST. Tried activating compatibility for prior Windows version what didn't help either for the installation.

I don't think that it is related, but I've downloaded the F6-Floppy-Installation files also - went into the Driver Manager, updated the automatically and newly added device with pointing into the folder containing the files of the F6-stuff. Now that device in my system is called "Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller" and I assume this is even better than the standard one Windows has used in Safe Mode to make RAID mode possible. Either way, RST and system does still work.

So how can I properly update to the new version?

Furthermore I have the "Intel Driver Update Utility" installed, that doesn't work anymore. I can't uninstall that one also - I don't get a message, no window - it just seems to be doing nothing. I can't uninstall something else then, as it says I have to wait for the previous Uninstallation to finish. But it doesn't.

Just to not leave out any additional information - what else I have installed from Intel:

- "Components of the Intel Management Engine" (translated from German - I assume it might be that in English)

- Intel(R) C++ Redistributables on Intel(R) 64

Would be nice to get some assistance on that issue. Furthermore maybe something with which I can automatically update all the Intel stuff? I also had some other official Intel-Update software installed I can't remember the exact name anymore. I did uninstall that as it didn't work either - I guess it was on Windows 8. But that uninstallation worked.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Tim

Re: rst status says cach-mode: off ??

Hi

Thanks for the reply.
Its RST 14.8.0.1042  , i just downloaded it

Computer is Toshiba Sattelite U940, i dont know how to find out about the chipset. neiter BIOS nor  Hardwar manager gave any information.

What do u mean by reconfigure SSD? What do I have to do and how?

Befoor reconfiguring everything i would like to know the meaning of the entry.
Like I said the GUI sais the caching work just fine. Just when i look under adminitser - extended it sais Cach Mode: off.  All i foud in the help is that it coud be write throug or write back, therefore i guess that it concerns only writing and nor the reading, and schince i prefere write throug anyway (i.e. no caching) that would be fine with me.
The problem is that the message Cach mode off could meane something else entirely and i would realy like to know what exactly they Intel means with this ambiguous entry.

Thanks again

P.S. I am translating from a german gui so the correct english names could be differrent.

It seems that's not true according to multiple sources.

See links:

Re: Intel RST Accelerate not working in Windows 10

Re: Intel RST 14.5 Windows 10

Re: Intel RST 14.5 Windows 10

According to this link it's related to UEFI (GPT) because this guy manages to enable it under legacy (MBR) and not UEFI on the same machine:

Re: Intel RST 14.5 Windows 10

All my machines with this problem are configured in UEFI with GPT partitions.

Not for everybody it's an option to reinstall and losing all your partitions in the process.

According to this article from Dell it can be solved by shrinking the boot drive with 5MB but I haven't tried that yet.

I do not have notifications on the driver release notes about this issue.

Are you getting any Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) after 30-60 seconds?

Please see the following information about known issues with the latest Intel® Rapid Storage version 14.8

Please provide the chipset model of your computer. I need this information because not all version of the Intel® Rapid Storage software will be compatible for earlier chipsets.

still having the same problems. doing a scheduled verify and repair every night and the found and repaired error count is getting bigger. following your instructions would destroy the woring array and the entire system would have to be rebuilt or restored. not a very good solution.

the 4 drives are about 2.5 years old now so i'm planning to replace them all. i assume i can do this by replacing each one, one at a time and letting the array rebuild it's self correct?

since there seems to be no log file created for the verify and repair process is there any other way of nailing down the source of the errors short of removing the drives and doing a mfg test on them?

it also states no bad blocks found.

Staggered spin-up delay

Does anyone know how to adjust the staggered spin-up (SSU) delay on an IRST RAID?

I have 5 HDDs in a RAID 5 configuration and the default delay between drives seems to be about 3 seconds, which means total spin-up time is over 15 seconds.  Most of my networked devices will time-out waiting for that.  (I'm on v.11.2.0.1527 BIOS firmware running IRST v.13.6.0.1002, since v.14.8.0.1042 drivers don't seem to support idle power management.)

SRT Driver can't Install

I cannont install the SRT driver on my Windows 8.1 machine. It says I don't have the minimum configuration requirements, which is not true, since I used it before I reinstalled Windows.

Alright, thanks for link,  I will take a look at it.

Disabling APM with HDParm helped, disks are nice and quiet now. Still have to run the scripts every time windows boots, which is far from perfect. Why Intel cant just give us option to diable APM permanently if we choose to is beyond me, especially since its next to useless in desktop computers.

Re: Staggered spin-up delay

As I noted, reverting to IRST v.13.6.0.1002 did work around the problem with the current drivers not supporting Link Power Management at all.  So, the drives will spin down when idle.

However, the staggered spin-up takes so long that many networked devices will time out waiting for it.  My last RAID system used a staggered delay of only 1 second, which served to reduced the combined power draw and yet was fast enough to avoid timeouts.  Unfortunately, I can find nowhere to set this delay in the BIOS or IRST user interface, and I'm hoping that there may be a registry setting that I can just modify.
