When a vender builds a system, they often customize drivers for that OS release. Since HP has not stated support for W8.1 on your system, there is no reason to assume W8.1 should work.
Yes, a full restore will take time. However, getting back to HP factory specs will establish a baseline for those drivers and their functionality.
Again, you must put forth the effort. And, I reiterate the importance of updating the chipset inf to the latest version HP has immediately after the upgrade. Additionally, if the W8 restore does work, then stay on W8, which is supported by HP.
